Here is an idea I originally learned from Martha Beck.
I’ve used it to get clarity on a variety of situations over the years.
It can be helpful if you are feeling confused or perplexed – like if you really don’t know what to make of something that’s going on, but your brain keeps poring over it, insisting that there’s an answer and trying to put the pieces together in a new way.
The song trick works like this: before you go to sleep at night, ask your subconscious to bring you a song that illuminates or explains your situation.
You may wake up with a persistent chorus or refrain running through your head – a song you haven’t thought of in years.
You may have forgotten that you even asked for a song.
But later, when you listen to it, things will become clear.
I’ve used the song trick several times over the years. Each time, it seemed like the song came from somewhere beyond my mind’s understanding. It always offered a clearer picture that helped answer my questions.
I offer this to you in case you are asking a lot of questions or puzzling over a problem, unsure about how to proceed or wondering what you might have done differently.
If there’s something you’re struggling with, and you can’t quite come up with an answer or explanation that settles you, try the song trick.
I hope it illuminates your situation in a new way or helps you understand something fundamental about another person’s perspective or about yourself.
